Eunice is a small town in Monroe Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,566 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie-Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. Eunice is home to the Eunice High School which was founded in 1892 and has a student body of over 1,500 students. The first white settlers in what would become Eunice were French Huguenots who arrived in 1795. There are references to whites living in what would become Eunice as early as 1799 when Captain John Bogue noted that he had seen “a number of English people hereabouts” and noted they were “relieved by our government for their services during the revolution.” The name “Eunice” likely comes from an Algonquian word meaning place where deer live and this pronunciation may be why it was chosen for the town site; according to one source, it took about three months for a surveyor to mark all 167 acres on which the town would later stand with a square mile measuring system so that residents could find their homes easily. In 1800, Jean Baptiste Pointeaux founded Opelousas on his property northwest of present day Eunice. He named his village after Marie-Thérèse de la Motte y Orléans (1763-1847), Duchess of Vergennes and wife of Louis XVI - also notable for her charitable work towards Native Americans - because he thought her name might suggest purity or virginity. After Pointeaux's death in 1801 his land passed through several hands until it came into the hands of General James Kenedy who sold it to Francois Legree in 1815; Legree renamed it Opelousas after himself and moved his family there two years later following Hurricane Katrina’s landfall on August 29, 1840 killing almost all but five members of his family before they could rebuild their home following FEMA guidelines requiring any rebuilt home sharing facilities be accessible to faithless citizens who lost power or possessions during natural disasters like Katrina or Rita). In 1846 Lafayette businessman Coligny purchased from Kenedy some additional land west of Opelousas which he named Lafayette after France’s most renowned general – Napoleon Bonaparte – marking yet another milestone in Acadiana history. The first white settler in what would become Eunice was Pierre Vigneron, who arrived from St-Eustache on July 3, 1836. He named his new community after his mother’s birthplace of Énée (Angleterre), England. By 1839, there were 143 inhabitants living here under the leadership of Captain Alfred Alain de Belisle and Captain Jean Baptiste Thibault. Captain Thibault also served as Postmaster from 1840 to 1844; headed up by Captain Antoine Lafitte who donated land for the village center on April 29th, 1840 In 1847-48 General James Wilkinson led an American army against Mexico during the Mexican–American War which resulted in more than 260 civilian deaths and 2 thousand injuries across Mucho parish alone due to skirmishes or artillery fire over 4 days near Lachine Creek Bridge – now known as Wilkinson Bridge (the only crossing remaining open between Lafayette Parish and Mexico).
