Deridder, Louisiana is a small town in the Lafayette Parish country seat of Lafayette. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge– Opelousas-Lafayette CDP. The name Deridder comes from one of two French words meaning "a piece of wood" or "a bastion." The first permanent settler in what would become Deridder was James Caldwell in 1799. He had come over on a boat from New Orleans and landed on the present site of Deridder after being refused entry to Acadia Bayou by local Native Americans. Caldwell's land grant included 10 acres (4 hectares). A post office was established at Deridder in 1825, and remained so until it closed in 1907. In 1819, Pierre Laval bought 1,200 acres (500 hectares) along Acadia Bayou for $2 per acre ($27 per kilometer). Laval used this land for sheep and cattle grazing and for an estate called Les Puits de la Hache (The Hackspit Pot), which he dedicated to his wife Hortense de La Farge DuPont. The Village ofDerridder was organized on April 12, 1827 under the jurisdiction of Lafayette Parish with a population of 20 inhabitants The area that became Derridder served as farmland until well into the 19th century when cotton plantations began to be developed hereabouts. In 1845 John Waddell established a sawmill on then undeveloped land between Lafitte Road and Old Hammonds Road about 2 miles east of modern-day Deridder village center. By 1865 Waddell's mill had produced 100 barrels/minute; by 1890 it had doubled its output to 200 barrels/minute Waddell's mill closed in 1922 but left behind a lasting legacy: many derricks still stand today along Lafitte Road near where Waddell once operated his mill .
