In 1863, Deridder became a parish when it was organized from parts of Lafourche and Orleans parishes. In 1912, the parish seat moved to nearby Gretna. Deridder is located at (31.589686,-92.075694). Deridder, Louisiana is a small town located in the Parish of Orleans in southwestern Louisiana. Deridder was founded on December 10, 1814 by Captain John Fenton and his wife Rebecca. The first post office was established in Deridder on July 8, 1831. The town had a population of 573 residents at the 2010 census. The earliest inhabitants of Deridder were Creek Indians who hunted and gathered food near present-day Lafayette. French settlers arrived in 1724 and built a trading post at La Salle Mission on the east bank of the Mississippi River. In 1781, General James Kenedy's forces captured Fort St. Philip from Spanish soldiers after a three-month siege. The fort served as Kenedy's headquarters during the American Revolution and later became part of the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1818,Captain Fenton organized an expedition to explore what became known as Acadiana (the area now extending from Baton Rouge to Shreveport). He arrived at Derridder on January 4, 1819 with nine men and two horses. On February 15th he disembarked his party at Grand Isle for Richland Bayou where they constructed rafts and set out for what would become Acadiana. They journeyed for six days without encountering any native Americans until they reached a river junction where they met another group of explorers under command of Captain David Thompson who had been sent by Governor Claiborne Toombs to explore Native American settlements along the Arkansas River Valley south of Baton Rouge. After initial skirmishes involving only local Indians, Captain Fenton's force withdrew upstream towards Lafayette where they disembarked their rafts again on March 2nd after spending four days exploring natural obstacles headlong into rapids that prevented them from reaching their destination alive or dead! On April 9th Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Lyon reached derridder resulting in public outcry over Yankee incompetence which led to Lyon's being relieved two weeks later with Major General John Forbes taking command instead until Lyon could be re-appointed effective May 1st; however this did not stop Inspector General Robert Randal from conducting an investigation into Lieutenant Colonel Lyon's conduct that resulted in his court martial which found him guilty but acquitted him when it came to charges such as unauthorized entry into Indian country etc... colonel Fenton returned home with much fame having accomplished more than any other America military officer during the revolution! lieutenant colonel Lyon would go on to lead one halfofthe first battalionof infantry formedin 1863duringtheCivil Warandbecomeoneofthesthatthe ConfederateArmyduringtheWar Against USA...hewoulddiein action aboard CSS "Richmond"onApril15 1865) Deride
