Deridder, Louisiana is a town in Jackson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,059 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogusville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Deridder was first settled by French colonists in 1714. The community name derives from a word meaning "a place where there are deer." In 1802, Deridder became an incorporated town and had a population of 1,500. In 1865, the post office called "Deridder" was renamed "New Iberia". In 1881, it was renamed again to "Deridder". That name remained until 1959 when it was changed back to its original spelling of "Deridder". The town's early history can be traced to 1802 when French colonists founded what is now Deridder on the banks of the Mississippi River. At that time the area lay within Spanish territory and only about 2 miles (3 km) north of St. Lousis swamp which provided natural resources for hunters and fishermen and supported large numbers of buffalo and other animals during this time period. The first permanent settler in Derridderville appears to have been Pierre Baptiste Bourque who arrived on July 10th 1830 from La Salle County with his family under the auspices of Father Antoine Lafitte who had landed at Biloxi Bay on March 15th that year with his fleet of vessels bound for Acre on crusadeagainst Ibrahim al-Mansur II governor of Egypt-the last Ottoman ruler standing in Europe after Mehmed IV's conquestof Constantinople in 1453). Bourque built a small log cabin near present day Canal Street between Iberian Drive and Frenchman's Road while he waited for future transportation connections to be developed along what would become Main Street. When these connections were made available he purchased land east of Canal Street including present day Canal Park which still exists today as one block long drive winding through rolling wooded hills covering some . A stoplight located at current day Canal Boulevard served as village Limits sign until 1905 whenintonation removed all limits signs from US Routes 12 & 190 after they were graded parallel with main street making travel more difficult especially during wintertimes when snow drifts exceeded 100 feet (30 m). This change also affected local elections since allouds could no longer be voted out by Representatives since their boundaries lay within USRoute 12 & 190 thus infringing upon their power as lobbyists for their political districts even though they resided outside those districts! In 1903, Reverend John Hogue organized a Methodist church campground southwest of town near present day Dairy Queen off Inductive Avenue between SR 312 & SR 337 where over 350 people gathered each Sabbath morning pasturing livestock while teaching musical instruction using clappers or bells! services included reading Scripture followed by hymns sung by Rev Hogue himself before departing for home around sunset each week ending with dinner cooked over open fires set close to ground so participants could warm up before returning next Sunday morning subjecting themselves once again to religious instruction! This encampment would remain active until 1942 when it burned down due mostly to weather conditions rather than any lackadaisical care exercised by Rev Hogue’s followers! It should be noted that not all early settlers were Methodists; among them were Baptists who established churches northwest of town prior to opening up space south along Union Avenue leading eventually towards Broadwalk Shopping Center today’s Interstate 10 bridge crossing Justine Drive NW just east of Highway 69 intersection!! Additionally Presbyterian missionaries also arrived in this region beginning around 1800 soon followed by Congregationalians then Roman Catholics following shortly thereafter.) Although many Methodists left Deridervilto follow denominational changes later becoming Presbyterians or Episcopalians there are actually several denominations represented here including: Baptist/Methodist/Congregationalist/Catholic/Anglican!! Today derided as “Uncle Mikes” because one third (or less)of Deriders total population identifies himself that way!) There are two primary schools serving the community: Sacred Heart Catholic School operated by the Sisters Of Charity Of Saint Joseph And Saint Ignatius Of Antioch de la Rue which has students grades PreK-12 and Holy Cross Lutheran School operated by Lakeview Church District #4 which serves grades K-8

In 1898, Deridder received federal recognition as a city and became one of five cities in LouisianaTochartered for Economic Development purposes on October 15, 1978 by Governor Edwin Edwards with Mayor Dwayne Crenshaw serving as charter chairman." Some popular tourist attractions include the Battle of Mansfield Bridge and the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief effort in 2005 which took place at Deridder's Main Street Arena
