It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1837 by General David Hunter and his family as a post office called "Deridder". In 1871, the post office became "Derek".[2] The name change was made to honor General John Derek who fought in the American Civil War.[3] A store and restaurant were built in Deridder in 1915 by J.C. Pogue and Ethel Pogue. They continued to operate until they closed their doors in 1980 because of lack of revenue from local patrons.[4] The Deridder High School Lakeview Campus opened its doors on October 15, 1968,[5] becoming one of only two high schools within commuting distance for students from Livingston Parish. In 1916, derisory lumberyard Averill & Company was established with a sawmill and gristmill on Hammonds Bayou south of town; it continued operation until it went out of business in 1928.[6][7] In 1948, derisory grocery store Michael's Produce began operations across Hammonds Bayou from derisory mill No. 7;[8][9][10] it continued operating until 1984 when it too went out of business due to competition from larger stores (and later Walmart).[11][12][13][14];[15][16]. From 1954-1960, derisive insurance company Old Colony Insurance operated a branch at 534 Main Street;[17],[18], but this also ceased operations after an unsuccessful attempt to raise money through insurance sales during the late 1960s recession;[19]; this marked the first time that a Deridder-based business failed since incorporation in 1837 according to village historian Don Whitehead.[20]:471 In 1978-1980 another insurance firm attempted unsuccessfully to open an office at 534 Main Street,[21]: but no such entity ever materialized and this building eventually burned down over time as well (it remains unoccupied today).[22]:471 In 2006, diehard outdoor enthusiast Robb Worrell started a blog about his love for hunting gameookers known as "Fishing Adventures With Robb Worrell" which has been viewed more than 1 million times online since its inception.[23]:1 On November 21st 2011 Robb Worrell shot five Ioway deer off Point Pleasant Road just outside town limits - surpassing his previous record set back on July 12th 2009 when he bagged four white tailed deer off Uptown Road about 25 miles northwest of Deridder - making him Louisiana's first licensed bow hunter!
