Deridder, Louisiana is a town located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census. It was founded on April 1, 1821 by Englishman John Deridder and his wife Rebecca. Its name comes from the French word "d'eride" meaning "riverbank." The first missionaries to Rapides Parish were Father Francois Xavier Laclaurie and Father Jacques Marquette. They arrived in 1827 and began missionary work among the Native Americans. In 1830 they founded a mission at Pointe Coupée (now part of New Orleans). On July 4, 1836, General James K. Polk issued an executive order creating Rapides Parish out of all of Livingston Parish east of the I-10 bridge. The order named Deridder as its seat and assigned it to Captain Nathaniel Pemberton for its governance purposes. Captain Pemberton had been installed as sheriff of Livingston Parish on January 1, 1835 after being elected by popular voteunity following his victory over Sheriff Thomas Randalls in a runoff election held that year. Captain Pemberton's tenure as sheriff was brief; he served only two years before losing control of the parish to another leader, James Wilkinson. On March 5, 1840, Captain Pemberton was replaced by Lafayette Bogue as sheriff due to allegations that he had embezzled government funds while serving as officeholder . Lafayette Bogue served until May 9th when he died suddenly after dinner with friends at the home of one sister-in-law Gunthert Spriggs in Bois d'Arc near Houma City because illness prevented him from traveling far that day . His death left open the question whether or not someone other than Lafayette Bogue should have been appointed sheriff pending confirmation from the state legislature which met on May 10th but did not act upon recommendation from Governor Claiborne Pell et al., who felt that Lafayette Bogue's term had expired on March 5th when no new laws were passed since his removal from office . A special committee consisting of Jno Ligonier (president), Nolin Henson (vice president), Wm Henson (treasurer) & Geo Fayette Beauregard recommended appointing Marshal Claude Mouraud effective June 2nd instead because Mouraud had been seen driving about town in Citizen's Police car without a license plate & carrying $5 worth of cigars! However this proposal never got off the ground & when asked about it later Mayor Faubourg said “I don't know what you’re talking about”! Eventually Marshall Mouraud assumed control over Deridder affairs including becoming reeve on October 12th 1840s succeeding Lafayette Bogue who vacated his post effective June 2nd!

The first store in the town was built in 1827 and the first school in 1829. The community developed into a small but thriving village until the early 1900s when it experienced rapid growth as a result of railroads and other economic opportunities. The population of Deridder peaked at 781 in 1910 but has since declined to around 300 residents today. Some of the primary reasons for the decline include lack of jobs and an increasing cost of living caused by rising taxes and healthcare costs.
