Deridder, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Deridder was founded in 1819 by General James K. Polk and his wife Lucy as a post office named Forney on the banks of the Orleans River. The community grew around its sawmill and cotton gin operations until it became an incorporated village in 1892. The first white person to live in Deridder was John Beale who established a cabin near the current site of town on October 15, 1821. A post office called Forney was established here on February 14, 1822, and remained in operation until May 9, 1865 when it was renamed for General James K Polk because he had become President of the United States that year. Deridder's growth accelerated after railroads arrived here in the early 1800s; a railroad line from New Orleans to Baton Rouge passed through this community between 1881 and 1886. At that time there were only two residences within Deridder limits: one owned by Elisha Peake and another occupied by attorney George Hargrave Jr.. In 1903 deridedown developed nearby which caused much concern among residents about what would happen to their homes should development take place adjacent to their neighborhoods without their consent or knowledge - fears were realized later when developers built high-rise hotels next door (now known as "Downtown" DeridDER). Derridder proper emerged as a vibrant community during World War II with many businesses existing throughout both war years including several shipyards manufacturing military vessels including aircraft carriers USS Enterprise (CV-5) and USS Lexington (CV-1). After the war many residents moved out of town due to new subdivisions formed in neighboring municipalities such as Metairie and Lake Charles while others chose not to move away altogether opting instead for more suburban lifestyles although some did return home following Hurricane Katrina’s landfall two years later. Today Derridder is still largely rural with most residents living close to family or friends while few have ventured out into the surrounding communities either because they are unable or unwilling do so or simply choose not to live there due to poverty, crime rates etcetera

Deridder is part of the Dulari Area School District and it is home to the Deridder Police Department, one of two law enforcement agencies in the parish. The community was founded in 1871 by pioneer settlers, John and Nancy Warrington. German immigrants also made their mark on Deridder early on, with some arriving as early as 1819. By 1870, there were four churches in the community—oneMethodist, one Catholic, and three Protestant denominations. A post office was established at Deridder in 1872, and continued in operation until it closed its doors in 1907. During prohibition era (1920-1927), many businesses around town had to close their doors because they could not get liquor license approvals from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board; however, most residents continued to enjoy be able to purchase alcoholic beverages legally throughout that time period without any problems. In 1984-1985, Hurricane Betsy destroyed much of what remained of downtown Deridder including most of the church buildings and residences; however, many local businesses did not have time or resources to rebuild so quickly and/or provide services that would have been available had they been spared such damage during Betsy's rampage through central Louisiana; instead they opted to reopen within weeks or months following her landfall which allowed them more time to plan for future needs should another storm strike nearby. In addition nearly all but one public building (the high school) reopened within a few weeks after Betsy hit - this included returning classes for first timers who had missed earlier sessions due to lack of space at other schools). In recent yearsDeridder has seen an increase in tourism with numerous events/parks being hosted throughout town every year precipitation permitting; however despite this growth no new development has occurred on Main Street since 2007 when a strip mall replaced most of downtown'sudown retail spaces following a major fire which destroyed much property within blocks surrounding der idDERHousing complex
Deridder, Louisiana was a small town in central Louisiana until the early 1800s. It was located on the banks of the Vermilion River and had a population of about 375 in 1810. The town rose to prominence after its residents developed an early cotton gin and other businesses. Deridder also became known for its production of sugar cane.
