Deridder is a small, rural town in Monroe Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village started as a log settlement on the banks of the Assumption River in 1804 by early French settlers and was named for Pierre-Jacques Deridder, a general and hero of the Battle of Minden in 1799. A post office called Deridder was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. Deridder's history dates back to 1804 when early French settlers founded a log settlement on the Assumption River near present-day Deridder. The name derived from Pierre-Jacques Deridder, who had led an army against Spanish forces at Minden in 1799. The first post office at Derridder was established on November 6, 1837 with Wm. Boudreau as its first clerk. In 1859, Louis Espelette donated land to build a schoolhouse and reported that he had received permission from France’s government to do so from then on without paying taxes; this gift has been cited as one of the earliest examples of philanthropy within American borders. In 1896, local resident John Ladd donated some 160 acres (66 hectares) along the banks of la Rivière aux Boeufs (the Assumption River), which became known as "Ladd's Landing." Deridder is a city in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,821 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous parish in Louisiana. The current mayor of Deridder is Willy Lopez and the current City Councilmember is Myron Ingram. The first settlers in what is now Deridder were Frenchmen who arrived in 1711 during the time of the Seven Years' War. They built a small fort on an island near what is now Loyola University New Orleans. The fort was destroyed by Indian attack in 1715 and never rebuilt. In 1732, Captain Pierre-Charles Caron of the Royal Naval Armada established a permanent trading post on Red bayou (now known as Ursuline River) about two miles north of present day Deridder with his own store and house. A year later, he erected a small white cross on high ground just south of where Trinity Episcopal Church now stands on state Highway 169 about one mile east of town center). This early settlement was upgraded to a town by Royal Governor Nicholas Brouillard in 1736 when he granted land to John Neilson for this purpose. In 1802, Captain James Cook landed at Red Bayou and set up his ship HMS "Endeavour" here while exploring North America for Britain's Crown Prince George III Heading west from Halifax Nova Scotia., stopping at various points along the way including St Louis de France (now St Genevieve), Missouri; Moundville, Alabama; Mobile Bayou; Baton Rouge; Natchitoches; Boston Tea Party site before arriving at Quebec City on January 14th 1803 finally making landfall at Red Bayou where he anchored off today's downtown Deridder October 26th 1803 after crossing 27 degrees latitude & 113 degrees longitude
On December 12, 1803, a group of Frenchmen under the command of Captain Pierre Deridder landed on the Louisiana coast. The party consisted of around twenty-five men and two cannons. After disembarking, they began to explore the area and soon found a natural harbor in which to set up their temporary camps. The Frenchmen were not welcomed by the local Native Americans and several skirmishes ensued over control of this new land. In November 1804, France ceded Louisiana to America following its victory in the Battle of New Orleans. The new state included parts of what is now Deridder Parish as well as portions of Lafourche Parish. In 1821, General James Kenedy organized militia companies within Louisiana in an effort to keep law and order among the various Indian tribes living near the state's borders. This group was later renamed the Provisional Government after it disbanded due to lack of support from Governor John Boggs. In 1830,Deridder Parish was formed from parts of Lafourche and Webster Parishes with a population of just over 1,000 people. Since World War II,Deridder has been home to many refugees who have fled war or persecution throughout central and eastern Europe. These refugees have brought many changes to Deridder parish such as increased population growth rates along with increased crime rates which has caused some residents to request more security measures for their community including more police officers and more fencing around popular areas like schools and parks
