Deridder, Louisiana is a small town located in Acadiana in the United States. The population was 9,987 at the 2010 census. It is named for David Deridder, an early settler and one of the first white men to come to the area. Deridder is located on a bend in the Red River and is bordered by Lafayette to the north, Crowley to the east, Slidell to the south, and Gretna to the west. Deridder was founded in 1804 by David Deridder and other settlers from New York City. The town grew rapidly during its early years due to its natural resources: timber, oil wells, and water availability. By 1835, Deridder had become one of Acadiana's leading villages and had developed a significant commercial infrastructure. In 1846–47, while war was raging between France and Mexico over control of Texas, Deridder became embroiled in a conflict known as the Great Lakes War (1846-48). After victory by France led to Mexican annexation of Texas in 1848,Deriderer's economy shrank as trade dried up around Antilles Passage. However, after Mexican president Agustín de Iturbide annexed California in 1850–51 following his successful efforts to expel American settlers from that state – including some who had settled near present-day Derrida –Derider's economy revived somewhat with increased trade along America's southern border. In 1861–62 Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee invaded neighboring Jefferson Parish seeking revenge for Union Army victories at Bull Run (April 19), Sharpsburg ( July 26), Fredericksburg ( September 13) and Chancellorsville ( November 17). Confederate General Jubal Early attacked then-lying DeridDERIDDERER parish from three directions on April 12; Union General Ulysses S Grant later called it "the rout of our army" because most Confederates retreated before dawn on April 14 after suffering heavy losses at Iuka Bridge near present day Baton Rouge; Little Rock 165 miles away also fell within Confederate territory that same day when Union troops advanced upon Fort Sumter in central Arkansas; but this attack failed because reconnaissance planes flying overhead spotted Federal positions well ahead of0057 hours even though no battle actually took place until late afternoon; all told 524 soldiers were killed or missing plus 400 more wounded or taken prisoner according to military reports The failure of these attacks - which many historians have attributed largely to poor generalship - left Confederate Commanders without any major battlefield objectives outside Richmond Virginia beyond guarding against possible Federals crossing into their state . Reconstruction policies began shortly thereafter with Lincoln appointing Arthur Buchanan Assistant Secretary at War for Reconstruction Affairs instead of Andrew Johnson who would have been responsible for implementing them directly On December 2 1865 Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order No 11335 which ordered all rebel troops must be expelled from Louisiana within two months beginning on January 1st unless they lay down their arms or were willing "to go through line by line every man into service with his countrymen as effectually as may be required." Deridder, Louisiana is a town in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette metropolitan area. The history of Deridder dates back to 1824 when French settlers founded the settlement on a small island in the river blindness known as Iberia. In 1828, Deridder became the seat of government for Cameron Parish and was incorporated as a village in 1832. By 1840, however, all but a few residents had departed for new settlements on New Orleans or Texas due to Poverty Point fever (1838-41), brought by several thousand African Americans who had been transported from upriver Baton Rouge during the 1830s Great Migration. In 1845, Derridder voted to secede from Cameron Parish and become an independent parish under its own governance. On July 6 of that year, it lost its charter as an Independent parish and reverted to full status as a municipality within Cameron Parish two years later. The town's growth slowed after annexation by neighboring Jefferson Parish in 1898; however, it regained some momentum during World War II with numerous wartime jobs available in defense manufacturing plants throughout the region. Derridder experienced another period of growth following Hurricane Katrina's landfall on August 29th 2005; over 300 businesses closed their doors due to damage sustained from winds gusts up to 145 mph (230 km/h). However, since then deridder has experienced steady decline with only 100 residents living there at the 2007 census - down from over 600 at 2000 census data point. As deridDER slumped further into obscurity following Katrina's passage through townspeople turned their attentions towards nearby Lafayette which enjoyed high levels of prosperity and job opportunities post-Katrina despite similar damages suffered by local businesses and homes - until recently untouched pockets still remain largely rural poverty stricken areas Thoroughbred horse racing also remains one major industry using much needed tax revenue for infrastructure development including more than $5 million dollars generated annually by this activity alone
