Deridder was founded in 1853 by Confederate veteran James E. Deridder as a sawmill and gristmill on the banks of the Assumption River. The mills were destroyed in 1865 by Union troops during the American Civil War but were rebuilt and continued to be used until they were destroyed again by fire in 1944. The town was named for General Lafayette "Mad Anthony" DeRidder, who led Confederate forces against Union forces during the American Civil War. Deridder post office was established in 1853, and remained open until it closed on November 30, 1957. DeridDER suffered heavy damage from Hurricane Katrina on October 29, 2005 which left over 60% of its homes damaged or missing their contents including all but 8 of its businesses (the remaining businesses had been evacuated before landfall). After five months of hard work by locals and volunteers aided by FEMA's New Orleans Recovery Authority (NRA), Derridder has slowly begun to rebuild with some new businesses opening since early 2006. In total, more than $120 million has been invested into deriding infrastructure since Katrina made landfall- almost double what local officials initially estimated pre-Katrina spending would be necessary; this investment has helped improve access to education for residents and spur economic growth overall throughout the community- something that many locals are still enthusiastic about six years later!

Deridder, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by Frenchmen and Spanish colonists as part of the Texas cession after the Mexican-American War. The name Deridder comes from French for "place where water flows." In 1857, Deridder became a stand-alone village when its post office was established on an old sugar plantation east of present-day Deridder. In 1865, it incorporated as a municipality under the name of "New Iberia." The incorporation created municipal services and governance that remain in place to this day. From 1927 until 1959, Deridder was also known as "Havre de Grace," named for General James Halleck's military campaign against Mexico in 1846 which destroyed much of what is now Jefferdon Parish and parts of Lafayette Parish. After years of discussion over which name would be chosen for the new community located just outside modern-day Slidell on Lake Pontchartrain (now Bayou Bonneville), Havre de Grace prevailed and has been used ever since by many people who live there: locals and visitors alike refer to it simply as "Deridder." The first store opened in 1853 inside what is now derridder Middle School; today's building dates back to 1924 when it served as a post office annex with its own Postmaster Department before becoming a Community Center in 1984. A small but important industry started here soon after DeridDER incorporation: exporting cotton from local fields into New Orleans during both World Wars II and Korea; however this factor has largely faded from memory since then because so little cotton remains hereabouts today that production cannot even begin to justify its costs associated with such an historical artifact! Today only a few relics remaining show evidence of this early industry - most notably several extant cotton gin buildings dating back to pre-war days still standing on Railroad Avenue between Clairmont Road and Wabash Avenue). In later history other businesses cropped up including two grocery stores (Eveleigh’s Grocery Co./Plymouth Grocery) open from 1915 until 1978; AutoZone/Mallory’s Hardware Store opened its doors in 1925; Ladd Chevrolet dealership operated for more than sixty years until it closed down around 1990 due to deterioration inside plus environmental concerns about lead paint leaching out from under metal frames; resident schools included Stroudsburg Elementary School (1913) & Hunters Point High School (1963); however all are long gone or have been abandoned or renamed elsewhere within recent memory...Today only one business still stands locally based on originality alone - Midas Jewelers Inc., located off Highway 90A just outside modern day Slidell on Bayou Bonneville - having operated continuously unchanged throughout any major changes or expansions dating back well into the 21st century!

Deridder is located at (30.816781, -91.569362). According to the 2000 census, Deridder had 7,633 residents; however, the population increased to 11,619 by 2010 due to growth in nearby Bogalusa and Metairie. The economy of Deridder is based on agriculture with some manufacturing also present. There are two schools in Deridder: one for students K-12th grade and one for high school students grades 9-12th grade. According to the National Park Service website "The Town ofDeridan/Bogalusa Historic District’s Architecture" it was built between 1847 and 1865 by John Auld as a stop on his journey from Baton Rouge downriver to New Orleans through Thibodaux County before he reached what is now Lafitte Parish near Biloxi Junction. A local white man named Waddell donated land adjacent to Bogalusa Creek which became known as deridan because it resembled an eagle's beak or talon when seen from a distance (). In 1885 Waddell sold his interest in deridan to Jno Cockerill who developed it into a small community with homes, stores and other infrastructure including a jail that served as courthouse until 1898 when it burned down due to vandalism by inmates visiting from out of state prisons
