The town was named for General James Deridder who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Louisiana from 1874 to 1880. Deridder's original courthouse building still stands today, and is used as a museum by the townspeople. In 1892, Deridder organized what would become known as the Lafitte Clan Council which helped to organize resistance against Spanish domination in Texas and Mexico. In 1898 during World War I, Deridder lent his support to America's war effort by raising money for the military expedition that invaded Cuba; he also donated land to help build soldiers' barracks in nearby Shreveport (later renamed Metairie). Afterward, he became an American citizen and donated $10 million dollars towards rebuilding Louisiana after Katrina destroyed most of its infrastructure: this sum remains one of the largest donations ever made to New Orleans charities outside of Hurricane Katrina itself. According to the United States Census Bureau,Deridder has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,812 people residing in Deridder proper (the core community), along with 1128 households outlying thereto.[4] As reported by USGS satellite imagery taken before Katrina damage made it difficult or impossible for residents to tour their homes without risking injury or loss thereof,[5] much less assess destroyed areas such as homebuilt levees around their neighborhoods (and ensuing flooding)],[6] only 917 people lived within 0.5 miles (1 km) of either city limits; while 737 properties within 5 miles had no resident living on them at all![7][8][9]) And yet we read accounts like this one: "The whole place seemed flattened ... deep water filled every nook [...] parts completely submerged".[10] In short--much like post-Katrina New Orleans--DeridDER lay largely undamaged save for minor inconveniences such as power outages due both direct storm surge damage inflicted upon many homes,[11] including high winds that downed wires throughout downtown [in some cases reaching up into first floor ceilings!][12],[13]-yet even then most citizens could not return home until weeks following landfall because access roads were still closed off entire blocks!--a near impossibility given conditions pre-Katrina due mostly à la carte construction! Deridder, Louisiana was founded in 1814 by James Deridder. The town grew quickly and soon boasted a large population of white settlers. By the 1830s, Deridder had become a thriving cotton plantation town with rich soil and ample opportunities for agriculture. However, the Panic of 1837 caused a rapid decline in the local economy and many residents left for better opportunities elsewhere. In 1850, Deridder was incorporated as a city and quickly became one of the most influential regional towns in the area. During the 1860s, several important events took place in Deridder including the Battle of Gettysburg which resulted in an increased demand for cotton from nearby states. In 1870,Deridder was merged with neighboring Jefferson to form Jackson Parish. Since then,Deridder has continued to grow rapidly and is now one of the most diverse cities in Louisiana.
