Denham Springs is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of New Orleans metropolitan area. Denham Springs is located on the eastern edge of Baton Rouge and its natural harbours are Lake Pontchartrain to the south and east, the bayous of Charente to the north and west, while Richland Hills to the southeast forms a natural barrier between Denham Springs and Baton Rouge. The community was founded in 1837 by German immigrants as "Hennigstadt". In 1855 it became known as "Denham", after General James Denham who had commanded American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1886 it changed its name again to "Denham Springs" after Rear Admiral John A. Denham who served in World War I with distinction. In recent years there has been an increase in development around town with new homes being built on both sides of Highway 9 which runs through town centre. The old courthouse building now houses several businesses including a hair salon, Dunkin' Donuts, gas stations (including one that serves beer), weight loss centres and more recently a tattoo parlour catering to local teenagers looking for their first ink job or initiation into gangs or other criminal activities

Denham Springs, Louisiana was created in 1836 as a result of the Compromise of 1837. The name comes from the Denham family who were among the original settlers in what is now Denham Springs. In 1851, the first post office was established in this town. By 1902, there were over 100 businesses in Denham Springs. The community grew rapidly during World War II because of its strategic location on the main highway connecting New Orleans and Gulfport. However, after the war, Denham Springs began to decline and its population decreased by half by 1960. Today, it remains a small town with a few hundred residents. The history of Denham Springs begins with its founding by John Denham and his brother-in-law Samuel Adams in 1836. The two men had come from Portsmouth, Virginia and wanted to establish a home where they could raise their families and serve God together. They found land on which they built a cabin and named their new settlement after John's father-in-law General James Wilkinson (1767-1848). That same year, they also founded an agricultural society that attempted to improve local agriculture through education and advice to farmers. By 1840, however, denHAM SPRINGS had become too small for John and his wife Jane to continue living alone so they moved into another cabin nearby with their children Jameson (1841), Robert (1843), Susan (1845), Anna (1849), Martha (1851) and Una Belle Hardwick (1852). Meanwhile back at Portsmouth: At around this time SamuelAdams started working on building some improvements to an existing mill he owned near present day Thibodaux Street/Highway 80 Corporate Boulevard north of downtown Portsmouth; he did this work under contract with JF Armstrong & Sons white arsenic mine owners [John Ferguson Armstrong] & Co.) On October 16th 1830 SamuelAdams married Catharine Whitefield at Stedman’s Episcopal Church south side Of High Street Courthouse Dockery Chapel [now part of Old Bridge charter school].
