In 1830 James Roche married Sarah Canning in Denham Spring's Methodist churchyard and they set out to found their own town with twelve families arriving on February 10, 1830: six men (Roche, Fenton, Martin, Weiridia; three women (Canning, Dowling)) and six women (Foster wife of Amos Foster), all born within a year or so of each other around Mobile Bayou that emptied into the Gulf of Mexico just south of present day Baton Rouge. The town of Denham Springs was organized on May 10, 1851. It was named for General James Fenton Denham, a Union general during the American Civil War.
