The town of Denham Springs, Louisiana is home to the oldest scopes in the United States. The telescope was built in 1824 by Colonel George Washington Denham, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. It is one of only two surviving telescopes from the American Revolution. The other is at Harvard University. The telescope was used for astronomical research until it was destroyed in a fire in 1851. It was replaced by a new telescope, which still remains in use today. Denham Springs is a small town in southwestern Louisiana, located on the banks of the Vermillion River. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. In 1865, when Union forces captured Baton Rouge, they burned down many of Lafitte’s plantations including Denham Springs – but not before taking some beautiful slaves with them! In 1870, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near Stroudsburg in Arkansas while prospecting for oil deposits; soon thereafter mining companies sprang up all around him looking for these new sources of revenue. The first company to come into business here was JW Phelps & Co., which operated a mill until 1893–when it merged with Phelps Dodge Corporation to form what is now known as Phelps Dodge Company Incorporated (Phelps Dodge) .
