Denham Springs is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 3,636 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie metropolitan area. The community has been around since 1848 and named after General John Denham who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Louisiana. The post office was first established here in 1851. In 1919, the state government moved from Baton Rouge to Denham Springs when it was created as a result of the Louisiana Purchase by United States President George Washington Carver Jr.. Denham Springs experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location within easy range of naval vessels based at New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain. Many citizens worked on munitions factories or served in the military during the war; some still reside here today as retirees or residents of other nearby villages such as Chalmette and Slidell. Today, Denham Springs remains a vibrant community with an active downtown core that includes theaters, restaurants, shops and services galore. Denham Springs is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by John Denham in 1879 and named for him. It became a community after it was annexed by Livingston Parish in 1881. In 1906, Denham Springs had a post office and two stores. The first postmaster, Wm. Dillard, served from 1886-1892; the second postmaster, Auren Bledsoe, served from 1896-1902. In 1922, the community acquired its own telephone line and name changed to Denham Springs (it reverted to its original name in 1972). In 1955, Denham Springs established itself as an agricultural center with pastures that included corn and soybeans as well as cotton and hay crops; it also produced applesauce and other vegetables. By 1971, oil production had become an important factor in the economy of the town; however, most residents continued to farm until the late 1990s when petroleum production declined throughout much of Louisiana due to widespread damage caused by Hurricane Katrina). In 2006-2007 (the years following Katrina), Denham Springs experienced significant vandalism affecting many parts of town including windows and doors especially on Main Street which resulted in some $5K worth of damage done that year alone according to resident Rick Hahn who at that time also acted as security for local businesses during Katrina's aftermath.
