Denham Springs is a small town in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Denham Springs post office was established in 1879 and discontinued in 1966. The first settler in what is now Denham Springs was livestockman George Washington Cheney. Other early residents included John Witherspoon and his brother John A.Witherspoon. In 1892, Jno. Fenton erected the first store in the community which still stands today as The Fenton Store & Cafe-Denham Springs Mall (now known as IHOP). In 1896, Pemberton built a log cabin on a knoll overlooking Denham Springs to serve as a summer home for his family and their servants. Mrs Pemberton named her new home "Pinecrest" after one of her many plantations near Pineville, Tennessee where she resided until her death in 1915. In 1955, voters approved demolishing two blocks of downtown Denham Springs to make way for the construction of Interstate 10 between Baton Rouge and New Orleans; however, this plan never came to fruition due to funds constraints. The only building remaining from that era is courthouse which was destroyed by fire in 1978 while serving as both local government center and jail facility during the height of Reconstruction Era racism when African Americans were not allowed to hold elected office or own property without white approval/ownership; this event has been dubbed "The Great Fire of Denham Springs". In 1960s through 1970s several businesses began opening up including convenience stores KFC and Burger King within minutes' walk of each other on Main Street; these locations continued until consolidation by grocery companies into quick-serve chains beginning around 1980 with adjoining shopping malls becoming more common over time across southern Louisiana suburbs such as Metairie and Jefferson City.. Denham Springs, Louisiana is a small town in Lafourche Parish, La., in the heart of the New Orleans metropolitan area. It was founded by General John denHAM in 1821 as a post office on an Indian tract just outside the present day town limits. The name "Denham" is derived from one of Denham's brothers, Samuel de HAM. The first store in town was built by John and his brother Samuel de HAM on what is now Main Street in 1826. In 1832, General James KNOX moved his headquarters from Baton Rouge to Denham Springs to take advantage of its natural resources. He called it "NOLA", after New Orleans and placed a mint stamp on all goods imported into the community. In 1840, citizens voted to incorporate as a village and changed their name to "Denham Springs". The first school was erected in 1860 on Broadway near today's Catholic Church. The population of Denham Springs peaked at 10,000 during World War II but decreased rapidly due to various factors including the Great Depression and then the Korean War which destroyed much of New Orleans' infrastructure. Today there are about 1,500 residents within the boundaries of Denham Springs proper; most of whom reside within its annexed communities (East Harlem and West Monroe) as well as adjacent Lafourche Parish communities (Lafayetteville and Staunton). The primary industry now employs many locals: nurses, mechanics, scientists etc.; but some other businesses that have thrived over time include two grocery stores – one operated by-and-for-profitally by local farmers who sell fresh produce grown at their farms; another familyowned business that has been serving customers since 1924; a general store with bakery operation; two restaurants – both owned locally but with national tourist courses served inside; several dozen homes manufactured primarily for resale or rental purposes such as duplexes and triplexes converted into apartments or condos over time; three churches/ceremonies & parishes – Our Lady Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church (founded 1886), Baptist First Congregational Church (1897), Episcopal First Parish (1901) – each with own gymnasium & library/theater complex; several thousand square feet of commercial space currently occupied by several hundred tenants including four banks - two independentlyowned - along with more than twenty convenience stores employing up to seventy people directly or through subcontractors denHAM SPRINGS LAFOURCHE PARISH
