Denham Springs is a small town located in Harrison County, Louisiana. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge-Shreveport-Bossier City, LA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Denham Springs area was first settled by French people in the early 17th century. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through this region during his march from Baton Rouge to New Orleans and destroyed several sawmills and other plantations in what is now Denham Springs. The town was originally named "New Iberia" after Iberia Parish, Louisiana. In 1835, General James Kilearns set up a fort here and southward along the bayou for protection against Native Americans who were raiding throughout the area. This fort served as a base of operations for many years until it was abandoned in 1848 when Confederate forces burned it down while retreating from Fort Sumter during the American Civil War. In 1865, Denham Springs became part of Jefferson Davis' Department of West Alabama which merged into Reconstruction South Carolina soon thereafter. By 1870 there were only five homes remaining in the town and its population had decreased to 100 people due to rural exodus following Reconstruction policies that favored white over black citizens. In 1929, Denham Springs was granted its current name by postmaster general John Dickson White with a view to highlighting social progress made since its incorporation into civilization some thirty years earlier than that of most other small towns in eastern Louisiana such as Shreveport or Hammondsville (populations then about 1000). At present day there are over 4500 residents living within easy commuting distance of Denham Springs proper which contains more than seventy businesses including three banks and more than twenty-five restaurants/cafes/bars/shops etc... Of course one cannot do justice to this community without discussing its unique history & culture which has resulted in rich folklore & stories being passed down thru generations... henceforth known as "The Town That Time Forgot"
