One possible explanation for the name "Denham" being used for this small town is that it originally was named after Captain Samuel Denham (1795-1867) who led a party of soldiers into Mobile Bayou in 1814 during the Mexican-American War and then served as captain under Commodore James Fennimore Cooke before being discharged due to ill health). Another theory suggests that "den ham", meaning "inaccessible place," could be derived from an early settler's description of the surrounding countryside: ". . . there are no streams running through this country; everything accessible by land is high enough timber which makes it difficult to build upon." In 1915, Denham Springs joined the parish of Rapides and began to decline from population growth; however, it regained its vitality after the construction of Interstate 55 through the area in the early 1960s revived development there. As of 2003, Denham Springs had a population of 592 people.
