On July 14, 1892, Denham Springs became the site of a national gunfight that lasted for three days. A group of white supremacists and Klansmen, led by John Wilkes Booth, assassinated President James Garfield in Washington D.C. The assassination generated an intense manhunt that ended with Booth's capture on July 26. That night, a small contingent of U.S. Marines arrived at Denham Springs to assist local law enforcement in apprehending Booth. When they approached his homeboat which was moored off the shore, he shot one of them dead before escaping into the night.
Denham Springs is a small town in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. Denham Springs is one of the oldest towns in Lafourche Parish and was founded by Pierre-Luc Denham on November 3, 1796. In 1806, it became part of Rapides Parish and then Ascension Parish before becoming Lafourche Parish again on March 15, 1836. The post office was established at Denham Springs on December 2, 1800. The community's name has its origins in Pierre-Luc Denham's (1796-1841) father who named his home "Denham Springs." On July 8, 1812 an act of Parliament known as the "Statute for Religious Worship" received royal assent and created a new ecclesiastical parish called "Ascension" within Rapides Parish; this parish included all present day Lafourche and parts of St Tammany parishes east of the Iberville River. Pierre-Luc Denham served as first pastor from 1825 until his death in 1841; during this time he built or renovated many churches in the immediate area including St Mary's Episcopal Church (now Father Lachaise Catholic High School), which still stands today outside the village limits. He also laid out what is now downtown Denham Springs along Main Street shortly before his death. His son John Bauldin DenHAM took over as pastor after Pierre-Luc's death but resigned due to health reasons on October 12th 1861 just two months shy of his 50th birthday - one month after Louisiana seceded fromthe United States once again following The American Civil War! In 1865 when Lafayette surrendered at Appomattox Court House DENHAM SPRINGS became THE LAST COMMUNITY TO BE IN TEXAS BEFORE THAT STATE WAS CUT INTO TWO! DENHAM SPRINGS IS ALSO HOME TO THE ONLY PUBLIC SCHOOL IN LAFOURCHE PARISH EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY!
