Denham Springs achieved notoriety during World War II due to its proximity to Lignite mines that produced plutonium for nuclear weapons research. However, much of this development ceased once hostilities ended thanks to American troops who forced German scientists from their labs at Bikini Atoll without giving them any notice or compensation.
The first white people to live in Denham Springs were the Hammonds. The Hammonds had a cabin on a small creek that they called "Hancock's Hole." They started trading goods with the French and Indian tribes living in what is now Acadiana. In 1764, Isaac Hammond married Marie-Lucee Lefevre, who was from a family of Huguenot refugees who had come to Louisiana in 1685. The Hammons became one of the most influential families in this region. In 1812, Pierre Laffitte founded the Laffitte Company on the banks of the Mississippi River. His company transported goods and passengers overland from New Orleans to St. Louis and beyond. In 1813, following Napoleon's invasion of Russia, Pierre Laffitte sailed his ship La Gambetta upriver to Baton Rouge and then downriver to Denham Springs where he built a fortification named for him, Fort Lafayette. The site of this fortification still stands today within Denham Springs limits. In 1836, John Salyers arrived at Denham Springs from Mobile Bay with his wife Anna Hebert Salyers and their four children: Lucy (1836-1912), Alfred (1838-1924), Edward (1840-1925) and Carrie (1842-1920). He bought land around present day Denham Springs from the Native Americans who lived there before him. John Salyers began developing this land into what is now known as Salyer Boulevard. This development continued until after World War II when much of it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina which struckDenham Springs on August 29th 2005 killing more than 100 people including many famous personalities such as musician Whitney Houston
