Denham Springs is a small town located in New Orleans Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The Denham Springs community began to form in 1853 when two families from nearby Metairie united with three others from other parts of the parish to create a new village called "Denham" after Captain Samuel Denham, one of the original settlers. John and Sarah Denham had come west from Kentucky in 1829 and were among the first white men to enter what is now New Orleans. They built their home on what is now Spring Street in 1853. In 1865, some local farmers organized into a company to purchase 640 acres (250 ha) of land east of town for $3 per acre and named it "Denham Springs." The community grew quickly and by 1870 there were ten houses, twenty-four businesses, and thirty-six farm animals. The Denham Springs community was located in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, southwest of Baton Rouge. The post office was established at Denham Springs on May 25, 1848. In the early 1800s, many families were attracted to this area by the natural resources available here. The first successful cotton gin and mill was built in Denham Springs by James A.Denham in 1851. In 1866, John C.Bryan founded a sawmill here which operated until 1941. In 1906, the first Baptist church was organized in this community and Reverend J F Willingham served as its first pastor. In 1946, the First Baptist Church merged with other denominations to form the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Reverend H W Day served as their first pastor until his death in 1980. On November 3rd, 1944 General George S Patton rallied troops near Denham Springs for Operation Fort Worth during World War II; about 5% of all Germans living within a radius of Baton Rouge were killed or captured during this battle (preliminary figures).
