The community was founded by Denham Springs Plantation owners John and Anna Denham in 1885. The first post office was established in 1888. By 1900, the population had grown to 2,000 people and by 1920 it had increased to 5,000 people. In 1930, Denham Springs became an incorporated town with a population of 10,000 people. In 1941, Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor and during World War II the town's defense industry produced munitions for both sides of the conflict. After the war ended in 1945, many residents left Denham Springs for other areas within Louisiana or elsewhere in the United States because of economic conditions following World War II. By 1970, only 6% of the original population remained living here; most have since departed for other towns or rural areas within Livingston Parish or beyond. However large numbers of descendants continue to live here today as well as numerous businesses and churches that remain active in this small community which has seen few changes over its 100-year history
The first white settlers in Denham Springs were the family of John Denham. He and his wife, Abigail, moved from England to what is now Louisiana in 1784. They founded a small cabin on the banks of the river known as "Denham Springs." The first school was built here in 1805. In 1827, John Denham Jr. donated land for a Baptist church. The present-day First Baptist Church was built in 1909.
