In 1907, Denham Springs became an incorporated community with a post office and school. The population grew to 12,000 by 1920. In 1925, Denham Springs had its own electric generating station and began using electricity for energy purposes rather than being powered by oil lamps or candles. Today, Denham Springs' economy depends largely on agriculture which has been its mainstay since it was founded over 150 years ago. The primary crops are cotton, hay, fruit trees, vegetables and potatoes; however other subsistence activities include fishing and hunting. Many residents also engage in tourism based businesses such as bed & breakfast establishments and golf resorts along with several manufacturing companies that produce products such as Precision Plastics Inc., JBL Audio Ltd., Sylvania Electric Company etcetera

In 1818, John C. Denham founded a cotton plantation here and developed a large gin operated by his son-in-law George Stephenson. In 1856, railroad magnate James K. Polk built a railway through Denham Springs to connect Baton Rouge with New Orleans. The town became an important center for cotton production until the industry went out of business during World War II. Today, Denham Springs remains an agricultural community with some commercial enterprises such as a grocery store and several churches.
Denham Springs was founded on the banks of the Mississippi River in 1820 by General James Wilkinson. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location and trade with the Yazoo and Arkansas Rivers. In 1832, Denham Springs was named for General Wilkinson's wife, Elizabeth Denham. The city experienced significant growth after it became a stop on the Memphis, Tennessee Railroad in 1868. By 1890, Denham Springs had over 25 businesses and 1,500 residents. The population peaked at around 100 000 in 1930 before slowly declining throughout the next few decades. Today, there are only a few hundred residents remaining in Denham Springs.
