Denham Springs is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in Denham Springs were French Canadians who arrived around 1800. They named their community LaBatteaux for J.-H. Batteaux, a French explorer and cartographer. In 1819, Denham Springs became the capital of Rapides Parish when it was created from parts of Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes. In 1847, General James Longstreet's army destroyed Fort Canby near present-day Baton Rouge while retreating from Mexico City; during this campaign, General Longstreet's headquarters were located at Denham Springs plantation on the east side of Lake Pontchartrain west of New Orleans. After the war ended in 1848, many Cajuns left for new lives in nearby Mobile Bayou communities such as Mobile and Marrero before returning to Denham Springs in 1850s to rebuild following Reconstruction – most notably jockeyBonus (1850-1912), founder of Biltmore Park Racetrack which now occupies more than acres along denHAM SPRINGS ROAD between US 59/I-10 and FM 1521/US 61/I-10 . The name "Denham" originates from early French residents Jean Baptiste Denonville and Nicolas d'Esperey who settled there about 1775-1800 according to tradition He also donated land for a parish church called Notre Dame de la Garde which was finished in 1800 but not dedicated until 1825 due to financial constraints caused by War with France). In 1840 Mme Jeanne Lafitte donated land for what is now known as Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge; her donation included a school house on an island that would eventually become LSU’s main campus across I-10 from where students can view Acadiana downriver including Deming Island off LA 10 south of Baton Rouge today. Some families began to move back into Denham Springs after they lost their homes during Hurricane Katrina while others continued moving out during reconstruction period because they could no longer afford prices associated with newly constructed housing developments such as Metairie or other areas outside their original geographical boundaries: many current residents moved back into town when development ended within one year post Katrina (2005) primarily because they could find affordable property within walking distance or less than 1 hour by car on various streets close to schools or shopping centers like UL Lafayette Stadium Boulevard just east of Airline Highway and Poydras Street just north of Veterans Memorial Coliseum Boulevard).
