Crowley is a small town in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,690 at the 2010 census. Crowley is home to the Crowley-Pope Observatory and its associated research facilities, as well as several businesses and schools. The community was originally named after Sir John A. Crowley, a British general who fought in the Mexican–American War and played an important role in founding what would become Louisiana. The first settlers of Crowley were farmers from England who arrived in 1826. A post office was established in 1830, and by 1836 there were three churches in the community: one Congregationalist, one Baptist, and one Methodist. By 1840 there were ten families living here; four years later only two remained. In 1848 Elijah Pope moved to Crowley from New Orleans with his family and started a bakery called Pope’s Trading Post bakery which still stands today on Second Street near US 66 (now SR 620). In 1860 Harry Giles set up his sawmill on Sunnyside Creek which became known as Giles Saws Mills until it burned down in 1916; however some evidence suggests that this may have been the first mill in Crowley that actually supported Agriculture & Forestry products! In 1865 Gilmore Bros., grocery merchants began business at Third Street between US 66 (now SR 620) and I-10 (now I-610); they continued to operate until 1953 when they relocated to Baton Rouge. The last store closed down on Willow Street near FM 462 around 1978; however their cookies are still sold today at various convenience stores across eastern Louisiana! Schools located here include Crowley High School (grades 9-12), Frazier Elementary School ( grades 1-4), Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic school for PreKindergarten through 8th grade (grades PK-5), Stations School District No 111 which provides prekindergarten through 12th grade services including elementary education for students 6 months – 3 years old while also providing daycare/preschool care for children 3 years old or younger during school hours; McAllister Intermediate School will open its doors this fall for ninth through twelfth grades after having been closed since 2009 due to lack of space! In 1924, Crowley became a full-time school district with its own superintendent and board of education.
