Crowley, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crowley was founded by Jacob Crowley on November 15, 1814. He named it for his father-in-law, John Smith Crowley Sr., who had come to the area earlier that year as a frontiersman looking for land to settle. In 1828, Jacob's grandson and namesake also settled in Crowley and started a general store there. The community grew steadily until World War II when its residents were drafted into military service and many left the area; only around 100 remain today. The town has experienced some growth in recent years due to its location within easy commuting distance of both New Orleans and Metairie. There are now three restaurants and two bars in the town center which have helped spur development; however, much of what makes Crowley unique has been maintained or improved since its founding including its logging industry which continues to play an important role in local economy today. Today’s populace is made up mostly of retirees from nearby Baton Rouge and other areas who enjoy spending their summers hereabouts as well as small businesses that provide essential services such as mechanics, groceries, etc.; these businesses still thrive despite competition from larger chains such as Walmart and Supervalu grocery stores located away from town center on smaller streets with limited parking opportunities. Jacob Crowley was buried in the old cemetery near downtown Crowley while many others like him are buried elsewhere in the parish including Stokes Cemetery just east of town on State Highway 190 (now I-10). A few graves can be found scattered throughout the parish but most are unmarked save forJacob's gravestone which can be seen prominently near where he built his home early during this period of community growth - one reason why so much attention has focused upon this particular community landmark over time!
