Neely's son John founded what would become Crowley Academy in 1835, which still exists as a private school today. In 1837, John's brother Moses Crain moved to Crowley from Baton Rouge and established a grocery store there which became one of the most successful businesses in town. In 1861, General Robert E Lee visited Crowley during his march through Louisiana and ordered all men east of the Mississippi River to leave their homes immediately or face military action. Most of the residents chose not to leave and continued living their lives as usual until 1861 when Confederate forces began raiding into eastern Louisiana looking for food supplies needed for their upcoming war with Union troops. When word got out thatGeneral Lee was marching through town, many people decided it would be best if they left too and never looked BACK again! The last resident to leave were John Crain's parents on November 11th of that year - an event now memorialized by a statue outside of First Baptist Church commemorating this special moment in history!

Despite this negative trend, local officials continue to promote local cultural attractions like country music concerts or rodeo events in order to keep Crowley active and appealing to tourists while also preserving some key aspects of its history (e.g., artesian wells).
