Crowley is home to Crowley High School and Crowley-Lakefront Stadium. The town was founded by John Crowley in 1867 as a farmstead on a tract of land he bought from Jean Lafitte. The first store opened in 1868 and the first post office opened in 1871. In 1902, John Crowley donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of land to the town for use as a public school campus. The name change came about because John's older brother Harry had been called "Crowley" by some locals in Missouri but they changed it back to "Crowley" after he moved to Louisiana and started calling himself Harrycrowley (later Harry Leflore). In 1898, Crowley incorporated as a city under its own charter with an estimated population of 1,500 residents. In 1903, it lost its charter but regained it two years later when another city lost its charter and became co-opted into the new municipality

The community was founded in 1892 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother James D. Rockefeller, who had bought land for $10 per acre. The local oil boom of the 1920s led to population growth and development at the site; the first structure built there were a library and justice of the peace office. In 1929, Crowley became an incorporated parish with its own government, which lasted until 1955 when it merged with nearby Stroudsburg to form Crowley-Stroudsburg Parish. The first post office in Crowley opened in 1893; later facilities included a bank, grocery store, school, telephone line (1929), health clinic (1955), and other services. The area around Crowley has been inhabited since before recorded history; Paleo-Indians hunted game hereabouts as early as 8500 BC. A prehistoric Mound City is still standing near present-day Napoleonville in south Jefferson Parish—the earliest major Mississippian culture settlement in what is now Louisiana—and may have been used as a trading center for goods brought overland from Iowa or Illinois by their predecessors Roller people 9700 years ago.*† Crowleys Landing Site is also significant: it’s one of only two known ancient settlements still standing within Orleans Parish after being destroyed by Hurricane Katrina!*‡ In 1802, General Andrew Jackson passed through this region on his way from New Orleans to Mobile Bayou during his Battle of New Orleans campaign.*† By 1850, however, most of what is now Crowley had been abandoned due to competition from more populous areas such as Thibodaux and Monroe; only about 10 families remained there by 1870†† As new plantations were developed along the river throughout that period*,‡ so too did large numbers of slaves be brought into these lands – some reaching up to 50% African American representation by 1860*‡ One result was that many African Americans managed cotton plantations while white men continued working rural roadsides and farmsunker shifts during Reconstruction era *† Many census reports list very high percentages of slaveowners among those living near Ville Platte – including concentration rates over 100% for wealthy planters like Alfred Swayne †‡ In fact Census records show that even after emancipation all but one black man listed owning property north of Canal Street between 1871 & 1880 belonged to white owners! ** However overall percentage range reflects dramatic change over time – gradual increase leading gradually Decrease until emancipation
