In the early 1800s, Crowley was a small town in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. The area had been surveyed by L’Anse aux Meadows and named for Major General John Campbell of the Army of Northern Virginia who was killed during the Battle of Brandy Station on September 12, 1780. The French name for Crowley was "Crowley" which is thought to be derived from an Indian word meaning "place where there is plenty of game." In 1802, Stephen F. Austin founded the University of Texas at Austin and completed construction on what is now the Alamo. One year later, on February 2nd, 1803, Austin became president of Mexico City. On that day he issued a proclamation inviting all Americans to come and settle in what is now Texas. This event marks the beginning of American colonization in Texas. The Katy Railroad was built through Crowley in 1868 and linked Houston with Dallas/Fort Worth. In 1898, it merged with the Dallas-Fort Worth Railway to become the Union Pacific Railroad. The railroad reached Crowley about two miles east of its original terminus at Lamar Boulevard near present-day Interstate 10 and US Highway 290 junction. It passed through Crowley on its way from Houston to San Antonio via Dallas/Fort Worth and Fort Worth Junction (now Arlington Cemetery). Crowley's population peaked at 1,500 in 1901 but declined until it reached just over 500 in 1940 due to World War II military relocation before returning to its pre-war size by 1954 census count

The original chapel was built on the banks of the Vermilion River and served as a parish church until 1836 when it was moved to its present location. It has been dedicated to Our Lady of Charity since 1840. Crowley is one of twelve parishes in Baton Rouge Parish and is part of the Orleans Parish School Board. The first settler in Crowley was Father Manuel Gomez who arrived with his family in 1822 from Cuba. They erected a log cabin near what is now US 1 southbound and I-10 eastbound. In 1830, Father Gomez' son Francisco founded Stations Chapel which became an important religious center for Catholics in Crowley. A school was also founded here soon after, and it continues to serve as a primary educational institution for children throughout Parish today. In 1837, parents Manuel Gomez Sr., Jacinto Gomez, Josefina Gonzalez de la Garza and Fernando Martinez donated land at what is now US 2 westbound and I-10 eastbound for construction of a new church which would become known as Stations Chapel Church (later renamed Holy Cross Catholic Church). The cornerstone for this building was laid on October 12th, 1837 by Bishop John Nolte himself! The first mass ever preached at Stations Chapel took place on September 10th, 1840 from the roofless remains of an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire! Today Holy Cross Catholic Church still serves as one of Catholicism's most prominent landmarks within Crowley boundaries – serving both as a parish church and also hosting special events such as weddings and funerals alike! In 1861 following completion of Reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War, Bishop Jules Micheaux authorized construction projects within parish boundaries including the erection Of anotherCatholicChurchAtCrowley (later rechristened Blessed Sacrament Cathedral) – which would remain operational until 1978! During its time at Crowleys disposal Blessed Sacrament Cathedral saw many notable people such as Archbishop Fulton Sheen who gave public prayer services here during World War II; Cardinal James Dolan who attended Masses here; President Lyndon B Johnson who made pastoral visits during his presidency; Pope Francis who visited this cathedral during his trip to America last year……and much more!! It’s no wonder that this once thriving community has long been associated with Catholicism – thanks to its longstanding history & worship options!!

Crowley was founded in 1831 by Captain David Crowley. The town site was purchased from the nearby Attakulla Indian tribe and development began in earnest. In 1836, Crowley became the county seat of Catahoula Parish and since then has been an important cotton-growing center. In 1860, a steamboat landing was built at Crowley to service the inland fisheries; this waterway provided access to much of Louisiana's interior. In 1865, Crowley received its own post office, and soon developed into a boomtown with large plantations and small businesses. By 1890, however, most of the cotton fields had been abandoned and Crowley declined as a commercial center. Today, Crowley is home to a few small farms and several churches which operate as museum/historic sites.
