In 1940, it had a population of 602 people and was named after Arthur Condon Crowley, an American lawyer who served as U.S. Attorney for Louisiana from 1930 to 1944 and then as Ambassador to Mexico from 1948 to 1960. He also served as the director of public works for New Orleans from 1924 to 1929 and again from 1933 to 1938. In 1958, there were only 106 residents living in Crowley; however by 1970 this had increased to 1,711 with over 100 businesses located throughout the town center including many banks and grocery stores along with several churches and other types of businesses that have since closed down or been replaced by newer ones such as restaurants and bars which are now more popular among locals than older businesses that once thrived hereabouts during those years such as Lupe's Cafe which still stands today across from Interstate 10 northbound exit 12 (just off US 90) next door to Donut King). Development in Crowley mainly took place during World War II as many male residents enlisted in the military or were drafted into war industries. In 1969, parts of Crowley were destroyed by an tornado that struck New Orleans. On July 9, 2006, local media reported that a fatal car accident had occurred near nearby Chalmette when drivers James Bourgeois and Brendon Allen lost control while driving eastbound on I-10 and ran off the road into a creek bed; both men died as a result.

After the war ended, however, many of the city's working-class citizens relocated to other parts of Louisiana due to economic hardships brought about by wartime conflict. In 1924, after years of deliberations, Crescent City voters approved incorporation as an all-white municipal district; it became effective that year. Since then, Crowley has continued to grow steadily - becoming one of the most populous cities in Louisiana today.
