Crowley, Louisiana is a small town located in the southwestern corner of the state of Louisiana. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It dates back to 1836 when the area was part of what is now Webster Parish. The name Crowley comes from an Indian word meaning "the place where deer run." In 1849, Crowley became a stop on the Texas and Arkansas Railroad. On January 1, 1893, it became a parish seat and within CPUE (Charter Township East Baton Rouge Parish), which included much of Crowley today. In 1898, hard gun cases first appeared in Crowley when two men were arrested for carrying handguns without permits in their cars. In May 1998, after years of conflict between the KKK and local law enforcement authorities over issues including race, violence erupted when two Klansmen opened fire on a group of black parishioners who had gathered to celebrate their birthday at a local park. Twenty-one people were killed; twenty-eight were injured. The events that followed have been called one of the most deadly riots in United States history. In response to this tragedy, Crowley formed a nonprofit organization called "Justice for All" (JFA) which has worked to improve relations between police officers and residents since then. In December 2006 JFA conducted a boycott of Nike products after company representatives visited Claiborne Parish during Hurricane Katrina damage repairs in order to promote their "Just Do It" campaign; many locals felt that this demonstration showed support for white supremacist views about black victimization during that time period . He is also credited with developing some of the earliest irrigation systems in Louisiana. The Crowleys were eventually forced out of their property by developers during the early 20th century. However, they never stopped living within close proximity to their farms or ranching operations until their death in 1957 at 102 years old). Today, many descendants still live within commuting distance to their home country (Ireland) or other parts of Europe

The town was founded by George Hite in 1851 as part of a move to increase cotton production in what were then isolated regions of the state. The first courthouse and jail were built there in 1854. In 1860, Crowley voters elected James Fenton as their first white mayor. In 1870, Crowley became an independent parish under French rule; its first white schoolteacher, Mrs. Margaret Coffin-Boyd, taught there.
