Crowley, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Iberia in south-central Louisiana. The population was 5,471 at the 2000 census. It lies on Interstate 10 just east of Baton Rouge and west of New Orleans. Crowley is served by the Crowley-Boyd School District. The first people to live in Crowley were the Cajuns who arrived during the French and Indian War (1753-63). The Cajuns built their homes on bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. They named their community "Crowley" after one of their chiefs, Sir John Crowley. In 1847, General James K. Polk moved his army from Mobile Bay to what is now Iberia Parish to fight against Mexican forces under Antonio López de Santa Anna. General Polk and his men camped at Crowley for two weeks before moving back downriver to Baton Rouge where they joined up with other Union forces led by Colonel Nathaniel Banks. In 1863, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered General Steedman to move his army from Corinth, Tennessee across Arkansas into northeastern Louisiana so that he could attack Union troops entrenched near Monroe and Alexandria. Crowley, Louisiana is a small town located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It was founded in 1835 by John Crowley and his family as a community on the banks of the Red River.
