The settlement began as a post office called Crowley on November 15, 1881. On December 3rd, 1886 the name was changed to Crowley-on-the-Lake after General James Crowley who served as Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana from 1865 to 1867 and 1870 to 1871. The community took its name from General James Crowley because he had been commissioned to survey the location for what would become Crowley Lake and his family were among the first settlers. In 1901 the community became a city under Act 9 of Lousiana which granted it city status with limits on white residency only until May 5th, 1902 when all residents were allowed to apply for incorporation into any incorporated town or city within twenty days of submission thereof by mail or voice message in writing. According to the 2010 census, 6 percent of Crowley's population are Hispanic/Latino (of any race), making it one of the most diverse communities in Jefferson Parish. There also is a significant African American populace; 8% of total population according to2010 census data. The economy activity around here includes farming, fishing, hunting and forestry products not typically found near cities but necessary due to lack of other land sources

Crowley was founded in 1836 by John Crowley and others as a post office on the East bank of the Alexandria River. The community grew rapidly due to its location on land that had been acquired from Landon Grant and other donors who helped purchase what is now Jefferson Parish from Spain in 1803. Crowley's fortunes changed after the American Civil War because it became one of the most important slave-holding areas in southern Louisiana. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Crowley's white citizens were among those ordered to leave their homes and take up arms against the Union army under General Ulysses S. Grant. Many residents decided to stay put and fight for their former masters rather than flee across enemy lines into Union territory where they would be subject to arrest or execution if caught aiding the Confederacy. Some local businesses continued to run while many others went out of business during Reconstruction; however, most black residents left after Reconstruction ended. In 1984, Crowley incorporated as a town under state law which exempted towns with a population over 10,000 from special taxation requirements imposed by neighboring Monroe County; Crowley had 9,723 residents as of 2000). The town has since undergone numerous changes: in 1996 its name was changed to honor then-Mayor Allan Hogue (the namesake of nearby Allan Hogue High School) following his death; in 2007 it merged with neighbouring Metairie; and finally in 2010 it consolidated with Bogalusa Township (both municipalities had populations under 10 thousand at that time). In addition to its namesake high school (which opened in 1997), Crowley has several smaller schools including Banneker Middle School (opened 2003), La Riviere Elementary School (opened 2005), Friendship Intermediate School (opened 2006), Clinton Junior/Senior High School (opened 2009) and Roosevelt Senior High School (open since fall 2010). The only retail establishment located within city limits is an auto parts store operated by Midas Motorsports Inc.; however this store closed operations late last year amid allegations of deceptive practices by managers regarding prices for items sold online or through mobile apps used by customers who do not visit the store physical premises during regular business hours
