Crowley is a small town in Louisiana, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It was founded by John Crowley in 1814. The community acquired its present name from Crowley's spellings of "Crowley" and "Lafayette". John Crowley was born in 1792 in Scotland and immigrated to America with his family when he was just five years old. He soon became an important citizen of Crowley, serving as a justice of the peace and later as a member of the state legislature. In 1814, John Crowley married Mary Lyon and together they started a successful cotton plantation near Decatur. They were also prominent members of their local church, which helped to solidify their Community's relationship with neighboring Decatur. The Crowleys were among the first white people to reside in what is now Orleans Parish during Reconstruction Period (1865-1877). John Coyle died at age eighty-six years on November 3, 1923, and is buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Crowley. Mary Coyle continued to live until her death on December 10, 1951. Their son John Pappenheimer took over management of the plantation until it sold in 1937 to Edwin Waddell for $1 million dollars ($14 million today). Airmail service between New Orleans and Crowley commenced on October 15th, 1922 thereby saving passengers over three weeks time!

Crowley is a town in Crowley Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was laid out by James Monroe in 1814 while he was president of the United States. Monroe named it after his ancestor, John Crowley, who had settled in what is now southwestern Louisiana a few years earlier. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s because of its location on auka bayou and its access to sugarcane plantations. By 1825, Crowley consisted of just 10 homes and 50 people. In 1827, local naturalist John James Audubon visited Crowley and wrote about it in his travelogue "A Tour through Some Western Louisiana Country". Audubon spent several weeks living near Crowley before returning home to New Orleans. He described the site as "a small but thriving village", with "a fine white cotton plantation" and "several families of negroes" working on it. In 1828, businessmen Ira DeWolfe and Augustus Kelley purchased land east of Crowley from the Laclede family for $1 million dollars ($ today). They began construction on what became known as the DeWolfe Plantation House (now listed on the National Register of Historic Places). During World War II, Crowley served as an airfield for Coastal Command based out of Shreveport-Lafayette Airport; however most activities took place at nearby Bossier City which had more than three times the population size! After Pearl Harbor Cunningham Air Force Base opened in 1942 adjacent to Bossier City airport housing all military personnel stationed there including Army Air Forces pilots flying bombers into combat against Japan From 1945 until 1949 Headquarters USAF European Theater were located at RAF Benson UKRAINE where General George C Marshall directed Allied strategy until his death in 1948 CROWLEY AIRFIELD closed 31 OCTOBER 1946 units moved to RAF Benton European Wing also disbanded there 9 NOVEMBER 1948 source: USAAF Historical Research Division - AAFHistoryOnline website
