Crowley, LA is a town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. It is the seat of Crowley County. As of the 2012 census, the population was 6,724. The small town lies on State Route 472 south of Baton Rouge and east of New Orleans. It was founded by John Winchester Crowley in 1869 as an unincorporated community named after him. The name comes from Crowleys Creek which flows through the town. The first store in Crowley opened in 1871 and the first post office was established in 1875. In 1902, Crowley became a part of New Orleans and it remained so until 1959 when it became an independent municipality under its own government. The population peaked at 10,000 around 1970 but has since declined to 5,000 today due to various factors including distance to jobs and competition from larger towns such as Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
