The post office operated from 1865 to 1896. Crowley had a railroad station on the Memphis and Jackson Railroad until it was abandoned in 1901. Crowley, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,269 at the 2010 census. It is named after Crowley's Ridge, located in northeastern Jefferson Parish. The first post office in Crowley was established on February 15, 1881. The name of the town may be from the Welsh word "covery" which means "a place to hide." In 1910, Crowley had a population of 1,521 and lived within the limits of what is now Webster Parish. The post office closed on December 5th that year due to low mail volume and changes in zip code boundaries which included Crowley within Webster Parish. In 1915 there were 2,719 residents living within the city limits but this number increased to 3,971 by 1930 when it annexed part of neighboring St Bernard parish. In 1931 an Act of Congress authorized the erection of a radio station broadcasting on VHF channel 7 in Crowley with call letters KGMB-TV. The station began operations on October 15th broadcast from a two story brick building on Elm Street which still stands today as part of Crescent Broadcasting Company (now Nexstar Broadcasting). On January 1st 1945 local businessman Oskar Lafitte donated land for use as a military airfield known as Harry Hines Field during World War II under Project Signet (later designated Operation Crossroads). On March 11th 1945 AAFemetery #3 opened at Harry Hines Field with burials completed by May 1945 including those for combat veterans who died during the war such as Private First Class Joe Hawkins who was lost overboard from USS Pascagoula following its sinking on November 14th 1944 while escorting allied ships off Okinawa Japan and Private First Class Donahue who was killed leading American forces ashore at Anzio beachhead Italy on July 16th 1944 while serving with Company I 116st Infantry Regiment Combat Team led by Captain George Sledge Jr.. On November 6th 1945 after years effort northeast Jefferson Parish resident Leland Keyser presented plans for reconstruction and renovation of Air National Guard Base Joint Base New Orleans aka Drew Army Airfield to then Congressman Tom Landrieu along with Mayor Mitch Landrieu his father mayor since 1978 Jimmy Johnson also attended ceremony and handout program . After KHOU-TV owner Houston Chronicle bought air rights for JBA & KGMB-TV both stations simulcast their signals from FM frequency 97.1 MHz share Krause tower facilities currently used by KLFY-AM effective September 12 2008
