Some believe that some of this popularity may have stemmed from its close proximity to New Orleans where such practices are legal and openly accepted. Many people who live in Crowley enjoy spending time there during summertime because it is relatively cool outside despite being located near Bayou Teche and marshlands.

The first Catholic priest to visit Crowley County was Father Denis Healy in 1847. A large schooner called the Notre Dame left New Orleans on her maiden voyage from Mobile Bay on October 5th, 1850 with 147 passengers including 22 children (of which only 9 survived). On November 15th of that year she anchored off the mouth of Cypress Creek while stranded en route from Havana to New Orleans with an empty hold due to bad weather overnights ahead and scurvy among her passengers; all but three crew members died as they took refuge among brush along the bank within view of flamethrowers sent down by boats manned by local volunteers under Captain Davenport; alone he made it safely back into port without being burned alive as had been planned for him ashore! In 1861 General Nathaniel Banks invaded Louisiana after Abraham Lincoln's election as President and began Confederate efforts to secede from the United States On January 6th 1862 Colonel Robert Ewell led Confederate forces against Union Forces commanded by Major General Ulysses S Grant at Elmira Bridge outside Vicksburg Mississippi Ewell’s unit numbering around 50 men fought successfully against 8 regiments numbered 25000 men commanded by Grant who lost 1700men killed or wounded while making futile attacks throughout that day and night before withdrawing towards Corinth Mississippi where he ordered his men not To retreat But To march headlong into battle knowing full well That their position And prospects Of success Were nil And That Within minutes They would be surrounded And Surrounded By Our Enemies Aftermath: Aftermath: Over 1600 Civilians Killed & Wounded Ewell himself surrendered four days later at Jackson Alabama
Crowley, Louisiana was founded in 1836 by Isaac Crowley and his family. The area now known as Crowley was first inhabited by the Caddo people. In 1837, Isaac Crowley built a cabin on the banks of the Sabine River. The following year, he married Maria Lambertson and started a family. Over time, Isaac and his wife purchased land in the area and developed it into a small town. In 1857, they donated land to the Episcopal Church for use as a parish graveyard. In 1865, Isaac Crowley died at age 83 after years of farming and ranching in Crowley. His wife continued to live until her death in 1928. Today, parts of Crowley are owned by businesses such as ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco.
