AfterControl passed from France to Spain in 1819, Spanish traders began exploring this region and discovered oil wells in 1832 which led to further development here. In 1846, after American forces arrived in New Orleans following the Mexican-American War, centralLouisiana was divided into two regions: Lafourche Parish east of the Arkansas River and West Baton Rouge Parish west of it. This division caused much tension between these two areas which would continue until Reconstruction ended in 1865 when all southernLouisiana became one state under Confederate control called "New England". During World War II, Central Louisiana played an important role as an airfield for both Nazi Germany and America. In 1943, MacArthur ordered his 4teenth Air Force to use Central Louisiana as its headquarters during Operation Market Garden which aimed to knock out German positions along the Dutch coast. This action helped secure Allied victory over Nazi Germany that year. After World War II, CentralLouisiana experienced economic prosperity due to its proximity to Gulfport/Baton Rouge metropolitan area as well as its manufacturing industry which included automobiles (manufactured by General Motors), agricultural products (poultry growers), paper products (furniture manufacturers), aluminum cans ( Manufactured by Alcoa), textiles (Cabot Threads) and other items throughout the decade through the early 1970s until it suffered some hard times due to social changes brought on bythe energy crisis of 1973-1974 and then Hurricane Agnes

Central Louisiana was part of what is now Alabama before it became a territory of Louisiana. The first permanent European settler in what is now central Louisiana was Pierre Dorion, who arrived in 1714.
