The history of guns in Central, Louisiana goes back to 1836. At that time, the area was part of the Spanish Empire and handguns were not common. By 1876, handgun production had increased significantly in Central due to new laws passed by Spain regarding firearms ownership and distribution. In 1902, Central became one of four original French settlements within Louisiana following Hurricane Andrew’s landfall on Long Beach Island on August 29th that year (the others were St Tammany Parish (New Orleans), East Baton Rouge Parish (Baton Rouge) and Lafourche Parish (Mobile).
