In 1861, Union general Robert E Lee attacked Confederate forces at First Manassas Junction; this event marked an important turning point for the Confederacy because it demonstrated that Union forces could fight effectively on both sides OF battlefields while also gaining experience against Northern troops; this experience would prove invaluable to Confederate commanders subsequent campaigns such as Operation Vicksburg and Second Bull Run . After Longstreet's Union army triumph at Gettysburg on July 4th 1863, however, Confederate President Jefferson Davis decided that insteadof retreating northwest towards Richmond like his generals had suggested he should do; Davis ordered allUnion troops northward towards Chattanooga where they would siege that city until relieved by General Robert E Lee's army under Nathan Bedford Forrest . In 1865-1866 Central Louisianians voted overwhelmingly for secession from United States due to unique circumstances prevailing within their region: small slaveholding counties along Interstate 10 sided with slavery while free black populations resided primarily in more populous areas east OF I-10thus creating an "integrated" society unlike any encountered within other southern states; furthermore white farmers/manufacturers who lived east OF I-10were unable or unwilling to invest money necessary TO bring cotton production up to grandiloquent levels needed TO support enslaved Africans (this lack of investment led many plantation owners/ownershipTO shift operations south FROM CENTRAL LOUISIANA TO HAMILTON COUNTY KY ); Resultingin an explosion IN African Americans working IN CENTRAL LOUISIANA between 1861 AND 1865 … comprising almost 60% OF ALL WORKERS IN THE STATE… The trend continued INTO THE EARLY 20th century….. today African Americans make up just 8% OF TOTAL POPULATION IN CENTRAL LOUISIANA
