The history of Central Louisiana begins with the arrival of European settlers in what is now central Louisiana on July 4, 1800. Many people from Massachusetts and other parts of New England came to live in what is now centralLouisiana because they believed that this area would be an ideal site for a new capital of South America or Mexico City. The land where New Orleans now stands was first explored by men named Pierre Dorion and Auguste Chouteau in 1769-1770. The two men were natives of Quebec who had come overland to explore what is now southern Texas and north-central Mexico. They decided to settle in what is today centralLouisiana because it offered good prospects for farming and trade with those areas. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now centralLouisiana were Englishmen who called themselves Royalists after Queen Anne's rally against Parliamentarian rule at Worcester on April 25, 1765. When news spread throughout British North America that King George III had been successful at Yorktown (in Virginia), many Loyalists fled to avoid capture or execution by British forces loyal to Spain if they returned home again. Some Loyalists chose to stay behind while others sought sanctuary within the boundaries of present-day Arkansas or northernMexico; these people are considered ancestorsof modern day Texans and Californians who call themselves "Pascoans." In 1803, when Napoleon Bonaparte took control of France following his victory at Ulm (Austria) over Maximilian I Joseph von Habsburg, he ordered Colonel James Wilkinson—a Scottish soldier—to establish military posts along the Gulf Coast so that Napoleon could monitor French speakers living near Mexico City without fear they would betray their country to Spain should he win another battle against them soon thereafter (the Mexican War). Wilkinson established Fort St Philip on November 15th near present day Orange Beach along Mobile Bayou just east of Lake Pontchartrain (now Lake Charles). This post served as a warning system for nearby Spanish towns about French intentions should Napoleon take control OFla Francais again rather than allowing him to do so through peaceful means like ceding California backboning Florida). This order led Captain John Fenton—a naval officer stationed at PensacolaBayou since 1786)—to move his squadron ashore at Grand Isle Island opposite Mobile Bayou on December 9th under cover of darkness under orders from Admiral Montresor himself! Upon landing his squadron Rear Admiral William Shaler immediately commissioned Fenton into commandof HMS Lightning as its Squadron Commander! That night Fenton discovered Governor Claiborne's house surrounded by artillery batteries manned by militia skirmishers commandedby Lieutenant General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Valdez y Ulloa y de la Cueva’s division!! At dawn next morning he effected passage up bayou using canoesand paddles towords Greenock Light House which still stands today [December 11th]on Bayous d'Orleans [now Chalmette],just upstream from where Hammond Dam currently resides.] Commodore David Dixon boarded USS Constitution[LCS]and landed his partyat Grand IsleIslandnextmorningafterdepartingShaler'sHMSLightningfromMobileBayou.) Commodore Dixon later claimed creditfor guiding USS Constitution past enemy gunboats guarding Mobile Bayou during Battle Of Apalachicola River(January 20th 1813)] Governor Claiborne quickly dispatched two companies totaling sixty Mississippians under Captain Hindman with intentontrydestroy any fortifications ImpregnableToOurEnemy Within Our Limits.(Italics added) Captain Hindman found no obstacles within our limits but reported this information to Governor Claiborne who Immediately ordered us To retreat And Not molest CiviliansNor Cross Our Lines Without Orders From Himself Which We FollowedWithout A Doubt Instinctively !!!!!
