In 1903, Bossier City was founded by French immigrants. The city's name is derived from the Boussac River which flows through the city. In 1911, Bossier City became a parish in Orleans Parish. In 1936, Bossier City became an independent parish and in 1941, it merged with Plaquemines Parish to form New Orleans Parish. In 1957, Bossier City was re-incorporated as a city. On November 5, 1960, Hurricane Andrew caused extensive damage to the city and its infrastructure including many streets and blocks of buildings that were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. The Bossier City, Louisiana History and Heritage Foundation was founded in 1984 to preserve and promote the history and culture of Bossier City, Louisiana. Our organization is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational institution which focuses on the promotion of education, research and public interest in the city’s heritage. The town of Bossier City was chartered on October 15, 1803 by General James Wilkinson as a place for “the better accommodation of white Americans who had decided to settle in this portion of Louisiana.” The town grew rapidly during the first few years after its incorporation, reaching a population of about 350 people by 1810. By 1830, however,Bossier City had fallen behind neighboring Jefferson Parish in terms of development and growth. In 1848, however, John Caddo made an unsuccessful attempt to secede from Texas and start his own independent republic within what would becomeLouisiana. The resulting political turmoil led to increased traffic congestion along the river road leading into Bossier City from Jefferson Parish. To solve this problem, Mayor George Winn—a native of New Orleans—proposed that the town annex part ofJefferson Parish so that more people could live close to work without having to leave their homes. The annexation proposal was approved by both the state legislature and mayor; at least one source claims that it was motivated by money considerations rather than any sense of civic obligation or patriotism on Winn’s part. By 1865, Bossier City had reached its present size with a population estimated at 10,000 people. In 1898 Hurricane Andrew struck Louisiana causing extensive damage to many rural communities across the state including Bossier City; according to one report over 80% of all homes in downtown were destroyed or damaged.
Afterward various developers began building housing projects throughout downtown while small business owners continued operating out-of-town locations such as the old Lumber Store Building on Lower Broadway.
In 1966–1967 local officials organized a citywide celebration honoring America’s Bicentennial which included performances by local marching bands as well as displays depicting American culture throughout downtown Alongside these celebrations came initiatives such as providing new streetlights for downtown during nighttime hours (an event now known as Downtownfest),instituting trash collection days each month (to help improve sanitation conditions),and creating an Interpretive Park adjacent to Main Street that tells the storyofBossierCity throughguided tours operated by historical organizations.

The city of Bossier City was founded in 1821 by Colonel John Kirby and his family. The city was named for General James K. Polk, who also served as the 25th President of the United States. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its importance in trade. In 1886, Bossier City became a county seat and continued to grow until it reached its current size.
