Bossier City is a city in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bossier Parish. The area now known as Bossier City was first settled by French colonists in the late 17th century. The town of Alexandria was established in 1820 and became one of the most important slave-based cotton plantations in Louisiana. In 1836, Alexandria was burned by General Andrew Jackson's forces during his invasion of Orleans Parish. The town continued to be destroyed by fire throughout the 1840s; but it reemerged as a thriving community following Reconstruction in 1865. In 1892, Confederate Major General Jubal Early invaded and successfully besieged Vicksburg from within its walls; however, due to Union bombardment and damage done by Confederate snipers, Vicksburg fell on April 9 that year. This event marked the end of an era for Mississippi Valley warfare and began what would be called "the Great White Invasion." By 1896, many businesses had been founded or tightened up their grip on local commerce following Reconstruction; such as A & W Brewery (1898), J C Penney's grocery store (1901), First National Bank ( 1901), Post Office (1902), Masonic Temple No 1 (1903), Baptist Church (1896) and others. Businesses were centralized around two squares: Broad Street between Market Place and State Avenue/Highway 90 South then east across State Avenue until it met up with Canal Street just south of downtown which served as a main Commercial artery connecting Baton Rouge with New Orleans on one side and Shreveport on the other side while also providing passage through marshlands for boats crossing Lake Pontchartrain connecting New Orleans with Baton Rouge via Mobile Bayou. It should be noted that these businesses did not function uniformly throughoutBossier Citiy during this time period because many were acquired or built subsequent to Mayor Randolph Pommery's creation of a "Business Improvement District" within which all types of businesses were required to operate under common rules including regulation on prices for goods placed upon customers' premises etc.- see Mayor Pommery website link below During this time period there also existed private militias known collectively as "The Old Guard" who patrolled streets at night making sure no lawbreakers sneaking around unannounced got away with whatever they stole or damaged especially anything deemed suspicious like building fires etc... These militias disbanded circa 1920 when much paperwork changed about them being disbanded rather than kept secret since folks didn't want another civil war type conflict ensuing
