At first called "New Orleans", this new town began to grow rapidly due to its location near two important military installations: Camp Beauregard on the banks of Lake Pontchartrain and Fort Donelson on Mount Moriah which became an important supply point for Confederate forces during the American Civil War. By 1860, Bossier City had become one of America's most populous towns with more than 10,000 residents. In 1865, following Reconstruction following the American Civil War, African Americans were granted voting rights in Louisiana andBossiersCity voted to secede fromJefferson Parish to form their own independent government known as "Bossier City Statehood Party". After years of struggle against discrimination by both white supremacists and Ku Klux Klan members who attacked black citizens throughout much of Louisiana during this time period;BossiersCity ultimately achieved its statehood on December 14th ,1991 after a referendum passed by wide margin!
