The first white settlement in Bossier City was a small community called Prairie de las Palmas on the banks of the Assumption River. The town was established in 1822 by settlers from Louisiana and it functioned as a trading post until 1829 when it became a part of nearby Rayville. The first mayor of Bossier City was John B. Henderson, who served from 1828 to 1830. In 1832, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters eastward along the river to what is now Jackson Parish in central Louisiana and selected Bossier City as his new capital. In 1840, the city had a population of about 200 people and it grew rapidly thanks to cotton cultivation and exports of wood, flour, cheese, bacon and other goods. By 1860, Bossier City had grown to over 1,000 people and it continued to grow during the 1850s and 1860s due to its strategic location between New Orleans on one side and Baton Rouge on the other. During this time period,Bossier City experienced significant growth in both its economy and population because of its role as an important transportation hub for goods arriving from New Orleans and Baton Rouge. In addition, Bossier City also developed into an important cultural center due to its high concentration of African Americans who made up almost 60% of its population at this time. This diversity helped make Bossier city one of the most culturally active cities in Louisiana during this time period. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided that he would launch an attack against Union forces at Alexandria instead of defending Baton Rouge which would have given Union troops control over much of southernLouisiana thereby weakening Confederate morale overall. Accordingly, Ewell ordered his army to move northeastward through Central America towards Alexandria where they would cross the Mississippi River near present-day Carrollton before moving southwestward towards Baton Rouge again (this event is known as the Battle Of Port Hudson). As a result of this battle near present day Carthageville (then just outside present day Bossier City), Union troops were able to take control over much of southeasternLouisiana including Bossiercity which effectively ended Reconstruction in Louisiana after more than 50 years).
