Bossier City, Louisiana is a city located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 54,912 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Bossier Parish and one of the fastest-growing cities in Louisiana. The city is named after General James K. Polk and was founded on April 14, 1892 by white men who came from nearby New Orleans looking for land to settle following the American Civil War. In 1886, General James K. Polk had become president of the United States and his administration made strides to promote cotton cultivation in what would be known as "The Great Plantation Scheme." A new courthouse and jail were built in downtown Bossier City shortly thereafter, followed by a school district that included Ohatchee Street Elementary School (now Bossier Middle School) on October 12th, 1892. As early as 1890, it was noted that interest in living near or within walking distance of industry had increased among white businessmen seeking acreage for their plantations in present day Bossier Parish and Lafourche County; however little progress was made towards actual settlement until 1892 when investors George Wetherbee and Amedee Sellers purchased of land east of Decatur Street between Stroud Boulevard and I-10 West from John Tisdale with intentions to build a town called "Esquire" on it which they could manage themselves while still enjoying benefits due to their owning property within easy reach of parishes they managed; this endeavor failed because there were no roads or transportation available then similar to what exists today making life difficult if not impossible for those intent upon settling here today even though back then there were plenty of people who wanted to do just that! In less than two years after its founding, Bossiere City became an important center for commerce within East Baton Rouge Parish with businesses such as Jardin Drug Store & Grocery on State Street being among its earliest occupants; over time this area would grow larger becoming home to several other businesses before reaching its current size including BankUnited Center which opened up in 2006 across from Union Station - now home to numerous local stores including L’Oreal salon/spa/massage clinic/, Belk department store/limited release movie theater/, FedEx ground shipping depot/multi-purpose building/, along with several restaurants/cafes/. With growth come more residents which led initially to insufficient housing options so developers built additional apartment buildings throughout downtown into the late 1990s through 2000s many now gone but all rectangular in shape typical of high-rise developments seen today throughout Southeast Louisiana according as much North Mississippi as well adding significantly unto traffic congestion problems currently faced by commuters travelling into easternLouisiana every day via Interstate 10 & exit 109A off I-10 just outside Monroe Junction !! From 1996 thru 2010 real estate prices have more than doubled (+$100 million+) without any corresponding increase job production (jobs created since 2000=+0). The name "Bossier" comes from the Choctaw word "boussiere" meaning to lead or carry something. The settlement began as a group of French refugees who landed on the parish in 1803. The original town was named for Jean-Baptiste Bossier, an officer in the French Revolutionary army and one of the few men to be tried and convicted for treason after he deserted during the Revolution. The town grew rapidly due to its location at one of the most important crossroads in Louisiana due to its location on both state routes 3 and 9 (then called State Routes 6 and 9). After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29, 2005, Bossier City developed quickly as people evacuated their homes. Most businesses reopened within two weeks but some were closed for many months because of damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. Many residents returned home following relief efforts by President George W. Bush and other government officials as well as donations from individuals and organizations around the nation. The population reached 2,035 by September 2006 before declining slightly to 1,953 at the 2010 census. However, based upon recent growth rates experienced by Bossier City over time it could easily reach 2,500 people by 2026 if current trends continue
