The Bossier City Gun Hammer Company was founded in 1892 by J.H. McNaught and H.L. Barnes as a small tool manufacturing business in Bossier City, Louisiana. The company produced pistols, shotguns, and rifles for the local market until 1934 when it merged with the Wilkinson Arms Corporation to form the Wilkinson-Bossier Arms Company. In 1957 the company was sold to American Armory of Louisiana Incorporated and changed its name to American Armament Corporation.
The city of Bossier City, Louisiana is located in the parish of Nicholls and was named for General James K. Polk, who served as President from 1845-1849 and 1853-1859. The city is bordered by Lafayette to the north, Webster to the east, Jackson to the south and east again with Hammond to the west. The population of Bossier City in 2010 was 31,813. The first people who lived in Bossier City were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and fruits on the edges of what is now known as Bossier Parish. The French founded a small town near present day Lafayette in 1795 before moving on to Mobile County where they developed sugar plantations. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson moved his army into what is now Bossier Parish after defeating Jean Lafitte at Battle of New Orleans. He named this area for him, which means "I will protect you." In 1825, General John Crain established a post office at what is now Thibodaux and named it Bossier City because it was then the only post office in that part of Louisiana. That same year also saw an influx of white settlers when two brothers by the name of Hendricks acquired 160 acres (65 hectares) along Red River outside present day Lafayette for $4 per acre ($0.50 per square metre). This land became known as "the landing" because so many pioneers landed there during that time frame from all over Louisiane swampy country searching for new homes or land grants alike. By 1830, however, most early settlers had returned home or left for other parts of Louisiana following various conflicts with Indians led by Chief Tecumseh Sherman since he wanted no part of any land concessions offered by General Kirby Smith (a slaveholder) through Treaty & Purchase Agreement #2 resulting from Indian War #5 (1812-1814). In 1804, Bossier City was founded by Captain Charles Sanders and his family. The city was named for François-Jacques Bossier, a French general who had fought in the American Revolution. The first post office in Bossier City was opened in 1811. In 1816, the city became the seat of government for Louisiana. The following year, Bossier City voted to become an independent republic. On February 14, 1800, a group of citizens led by Mayor John Smedley petitioned President James K. Polk to annex Bossier City as part of Texas. However, Polk refused to recognize any republics without the consent of Congress. In 1802, General Robert Eagan purchased land adjacent to present-day Bossier City from Jean Baptiste Lafitte and built Fort Taylor on it. In 1810, Lafitte moved his headquarters from Mobile Bay to what is now Baton Rouge so that he could better protect his trade with New Orleans and Tuscaloosa County (Alabama). Lafitte's forces were defeated at the Battle of Resaca de la Bahia on July 25,1814; however, he continued to resist Ulysses S. Grant's invasion of Texas until he surrendered at Montgomeryville on October 16th of that same year. For this action and others during the Texan War for Independence (1846-1848), Lafitte was convicted of treason and sentenced to life in prison at Monticello Prison in Virginia after being denied parole several times due to his poor health condition. In 1865, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston called upon Governor John Bel Edwards for permission to move troops into central Louisiana from Mississippi because Edwards had refused earlier requests from Johnston for assistance against Union forces moving southward across Georgia toward Baton Rouge and New Orleans Harbor. When governor Edwards declined Johnston's request formaly & informally+ Johnston decided then & there that he would take over military operations from Edwards himself= Johnston marched his corps into town on November 3rd 1865 under cover of darkness + captured all but one building within limits set by Edwin Vaux before withdrawing later that day without loss or casualty= At 2am EST November 4th 1865 just before dawn+ a crowd numbering around 10K gathered outside old courthouse which had been burned down hours earlier when Johnston made his initial incursion+ up close you could see individual bullet holes through planking== Aftermath: both Battlefields are still extant; business areas have been redeveloped as condos/hotels; downtown has experienced significant gentrification=== When Texas seceded from the United States in 1861 gubernatorial elections held statewide throughout Louisiana+, Colonel Edmund Kirby Smith took over Govt Operations outsourceredby Kirby Smith while I remained Commissioner concurrent w/Colonel Smith~ #bossiercityhistory
