In 1931, Mayor James Auld ordered police to shoot at black motorists who refused to stop for him while he rode his bike through town; this led to further violence between races that lasted until 1966 when ordinances were passed allowing African American citizens full access to municipal services without fear of retribution from either race or authority figures
