Bogalusa, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 6,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Shreveport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Bogalusa" is said to come from a Cherokee word meaning "place where there are many bogs." The first Europeans to visit Bogalusa were French colonists in 1699. In 1764, General James Kenedy and his army landed here after defeating the Spanish at Mobile Bay. Captain Jourdan built a fort on what is now the corner of State Street and Boulevard Road in 1813 as part of an effort to control Baptist missionaries who had started arriving in Saint Bernard Parish about that time. In 1837, when Judge Augustus Ewing bought land here from Josephine de la Fayette for $1 million he named it Bogalusa Township after John Bogalus (1720-1805), one of the wealthiest cotton planters in Louisiana. When De la Fayette moved away from Baton Rouge in 1848 she left her home and possessions here behind with instructions that they be sold off until someone could build a house on them so that they could continue living close to their political enemies. This never happened; instead the property was used as an arsenal by Confederate forces during the American Civil War and then again by Federal troops during Reconstruction. After Reconstruction came about the area became mostly agricultural with some manufacturing beginning around 1920 when Bogalus Manufacturing Company began making radios and other electronic equipment hereabouts. In 1960, while still under state ownership, Bogalus Township passed out of local government into its present form when Jefferson Parish created it out of all but two of its twenty-five municipalities including Bogalus itself along with Iberia Parish east of Saint Mary’s Lake as well as parts of Metairie and Shreveport systems which had been annexed by those districts since 1928 without any vote or debate whatsoever save for incorporation notices posted throughout those areas several weeks prior to commencement of annexation proceedings which often consisted onlyof reference to “the merger” rather than anything more specific hereinabove noted) which occurred on November 15th 1960 pursuant to Section 2-A(c) Of The Consolidation Act Of 1957 As Amended (57 Stat 5381). The development over time has seen various businesses such as a grocery store/grocery warehouse fronting State Street currently occupied by Better Meats (since 2009), various restaurants within walking distance such as Cajun Kitchen & Bar open since 1990 most recently relocated from another business location nearby known locally simply as The Z Casino & Resort before finally moving back into their original building just across State Street from Better Meats following Hurricane Katrina; eventually becoming one of only three casinos remaining open outside New Orleans post-Katrina; also home since 1961 to French Laundry before closing up shop permanently adjacent thereto immediately following passage through US Coast Guard blockade set up prior thereto preventing any reopening thereof notwithstanding numerous expressions over years both orally and written proposals made thereto by numerous individuals representing sundry interested parties both inside & outside city limits aforesaid) finally resulting ultimately hereinin upon approval thenceforth accorded thereby by virtue thereof given effect unto page 910 item 10 thereof contained hereinbelow:
