Bogalusa, Louisiana was first settled by the Caddo people in the late 18th century. The town developed around a trading post called Bogalusa Fort. In 1806, General Andrew Jackson invaded Mobile Bay and sacked Bogalusa for its supplies of salt and other goods that had been taken from the British during their war with France. After his victory at Horseshoe Bend, Jackson decided to establish an outpost in what is now Baton Rouge as part of his final offensive against French forces. In 1810, General James Ketchum established a fur trading post at Bogalusa Fort which became an important center for trade with the Seminole Indian Tribe and Mexican traders. By 1830, Bogalusa had a population of 300 residents. A courthouse and jail were built in 1835 and 1840 respectively. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell occupied Bogalusa while besieging Alexandria Parish during the American Civil War. In 1865, after Union forces captured Baton Rouge, they burned down all but one building in downtown Bogalusa before moving on. After the end of World War II, Bogalusa experienced rapid growth as a result of increased oil production in nearby Arkadelphia and Enterprise counties. The town's main thoroughfare became known as "The Boulevard" because it was one of the few streets in Baton Rouge that was not completely destroyed by bombing during World War II. The local economy also benefited from highway construction which added access to new industrial areas outside of town. However, some high-profile incidents such as a drunken driving accident which killed two young children led to public backlash against fast-paced development within the small community. Bogalusa has since regained its former prominence as a cultural center for Acadiana region and remains an important local tourist destination despite this recent slowdown in economic activity
